What is Optical insert?

Sunread’s concept of insert optics was developed so that people with a need for correction glasses (near-sighted / far-sighted / astigmatism) can also use high-quality sports glasses at a reasonable price.

Sunread already has many different sunglasses in our sports collection, that is with bifocal reading area in the lower part of the sunglasses in the most common power for reading glasses. With a combination of an optical lens on the inside of the sunglasses along with a pair of bifocal outer sun glasses, one achieves a similar effect normally called progressive glasses.

Progressively feeling with Sunread Optics is a fixed transition between vision needs at a distance and the need to gain close-up.

Usually, you do not need to think about which reading strength is required as this normally stands in the eye prescription from your optician. It is called “Add” after the English order “Addition”. If you are nearsighted, far-sighted with or without astigmatic correction, then age vision will occur at a certain age, often say 40+. It is the same need for most people regardless of vision correction at a distance. Sunread Optics is thus a pair of single vision glasses to solve the need at a distance and the astigmatic visual defect. The reading needs already exist in the bifocal sun glasses and together it becomes a perfect mix for all of us who have come to the stage where you need additional reading power close up.

The advantages are that you can easily change the sunglasses to another color, easy to clean. The optical lens stays free of scratches for a long time and sits so close to the outer sunlight without disturbing eyelashes that can usually be a problem with insert optics. With dark sun glasses you can’t see that there are a few glasses on the inside! The outer sunshade is at the same time a protective glass as they are made of polycarbonate with 2 mm thickness and certified to the highest standard for protective goggles against particles at high speed.

What is "bifocal" sunglasses?

The word “Bifocal” is two words, bi = two and focal = focal poimt. The word describes an optical lens with two different focal points. In Sunread sunglasses, we have moulded an optical lens in the bottom of the lens in various powers that are in a very high quality. The rest of lens is without any power so when looking straight ahead, the power is zero. If you hold your head still and looking down with your eyes, you are  looking through a pair of reading glasses that give the magnification required to focus at close range.

With insertion optics, a single power optical lens is inserted on the inside of the Sun-lens and gives the strength required at distance (-) nearsightedness and (+) for farsightedness. In most prescriptions from an optometrist, the value for your various needs are stated. For example the addition you need to be able to read at close range is called “ADD” or addition. Strength for far and near are added together and gives your total reading strength. That is why insertion optics and bifocal lenses works great together.

Can I get my Sunread sunglasses with "progressive" prescription lenses?

Sunread can deliver single vision and progressive lenses to our Carbon fibre frames. Read more here

A progressive lens gives you three vision powers in one seamless lens for a more natural and flattering way to see your world. If you need more than one lens strength to read, do computer work or drive, progressives let you can see clearly at any distance with one pair of glasses. You simply adjust your head position to see three ranges of distance. Bring your head up to see far away; look straight ahead for mid-range vision, and point your nose down to read or do close-up work, like texting.

At activities where you move your head quickly and where even the ground moves such as when sailing, there may be a problem and recommendation from many opticians are not to use progressive lenses when performing a sport that requires fast movements.

The big difference between bifocals and progressive lenses are the price and delivery times where progressive lenses are much more expensive than bifocal and easy to keep in stock and need to be manufactured from lens manufacturers under specific measures from your face.

In sports glasses and head form sunglasses, it is more difficult to get it right then the lens is very arched. Polarisation and colouring is then an element that is either done before or after cutting the lens.

Sunread unfortunately cannot currently deliver progressive prescription lenses to our sunglasses but we provide a similar solution called Sunread Optics, see below!

How do I clean my sunglasses?

Best is to remove the sun glasses from the frame if possible and rinse in warm water and use with advantage a little hand soap. Avoid window cleaner with ammonia.

Wipe clean with a microfiber cloth or similar with short fiber, avoid paper towels with long fiber that can mat lenses over time.

Do not wipe clean with garments!

What if I use contact lenses sometimes when I've bought Sunread Optics?

Sunread Optics has optical lenses mounted on the inside of the sunglasses (inside the sunglasses). Everything else is the same as in our collection Sunread sunglasses “Sport”.
If you occasionally use contact lenses, i.e. when not needed the optical lenses that is mounted in the Sunread Optics frame. In that case, just take the sun glasses, buy an extra loose frame and click the sun glasses in the new frame then you have a couple of regular sunglasses without any strength.

How scratch resistant are my Sunread sunglasses?

Sunread sunglasses come with polycarbonate lenses.

Polycarbonate is a plastic that is hard but also very durable and are suitable as protective glasses. All plastics have different scratch resistance but also other criteria that must be met such as UV resistance, temperature resistance, optical performance. Polycarbonate is an excellent material for sunglasses and the hardest plastic which satisfies the high requirements placed on sunglasses.

The degree of hardness of polycarbonate is very high but it is possible to scratch and proper storage is the key to scratch-free sun glasses when scratches rarely comes by itself when you wear them as intended.

Sunread Sunglass lenses are hard multi coated from the factory and they are very scratch resistant. Sunglasses are subjected to tough external influences and takes a beating from particles in the air which, over time, create invisible micro scratches. It is possible to “Nano” treat the outside on the sun glasses that make the surface smoother and tighter and keeps its shine longer. Contact customer service for further advice on Nano treatment.

Avoid storing your sunglasses in:

  • Pocket
  • The center console of the car
  • Unprotected in a box where it can roll around

Avoid drying your sunglasses:

  • with Garments
  • with kitchen paper (grain long)
  • dry (like washing your car without water)
  • with strong chemicals (avoid all chemicals)

Tighten the screws in the hinges periodically so you avoid the frame being pressed against the sun lens by external pressure, i.e. If you have them in a pocket or similar. It is best to store your sunglasses in the included microfibre pouch/storage box.

How do I remove the sun glass on Sunread sport models?

Sun glasses sits in the frame with two tracks that hold the glass firmly. It is easy to remove the sun glasses. Take hold of the outer corner of the glass with thumb and index finger while holding the frame with the other hand. Lift out the sun glass at the hinges first. It helps if you pull the frame at the same time and you see the track where the sun glass is connected to the frame. Lift it out easily.
Opposite, conversely, i.e. at the nose side first and then back at the hinges.

What is hydrophobic lenses?

Hydrophobic coating is a water-and dirt-repellent layers that allow the lens to stays clean longer and is easier to clean. You don’t have to clean as much as usually which will make the lens mat over time. It’s enough to wipe the lens with a little soap and water in one move with a polishing cloth with short fiber. Hydrophobic surface on Sunread lenses are made with “nanoscopic” technology. The surface stick even longer and is perceived as a sleek smooth surface when touched. The effect can be compared with the Lotus effect in which water forms larger drops against the Lotus blade surface and a reduced area against the blade with less friction and thus quickly runs along the blade toward the center where the plant absorbs water. The technology is used in the automotive industry on windscreens, among others.
